JMU Softball lets five-run seventh inning lead slip away in 10-9 loss at App State

BOONE, N.C. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison softball dropped a heartbreaker to the App State, falling 10-9 on Sunday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.

App State (28-16, 7-11 Sun Belt) scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win, finishing with 10 runs on 12 hits. JMU (21-22, 8-10 Sun Belt) recorded nine runs, nine hits, and two errors.

For JMU, Bella Henzler delivered a standout performance with a three-run home run, finishing 2-for-4 and four RBI. Payton List added a two-run homer, while Kylee Gleason launched her third long ball of the year, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk.

How It Happened:
• App State struck first with runs in the opening two innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
• JMU responded in the fourth inning, as List launched a two-run home run to tie the game before Henzler added an RBI single to give the Dukes a 3-2 advantage.
• The Mountaineers answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to reclaim the lead.
• The Dukes surged ahead in the fifth, beginning with a solo home run from Kylee Gleason. JMU capitalized on an error, added a sacrifice fly from Emily LeGrand, and broke the game open with Henzler’s three-run home run to take a 9-4 lead.
• A solo home run cut into the deficit for the Mountaineers before a string of walks, a hit-by-pitch, and RBI singles allowed the Mountaineers to complete the rally and walk off with a 10-9 victory.

Up Next:
The Dukes are set to hit the road again for a midweek matchup against in-state foe Virginia on Tuesday, April 21 at 5 p.m.
