JMU Men’s Basketball knocks off league-leading App State, 69-58

HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison got 21 points from Justin McBride and held App State to 35.2 percent shooting from the field, defeating the first-place Mountaineers 68-59 on Saturday afternoon at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.

JMU (14-13, 6-8 Sun Belt) won its third straight game, while App State (18-10, 10-5 SBC) saw its seven-game win streak come to an end. The win also marked the Dukes’ first over the Mountaineers since Feb. 4, 2023, snapping a five-game losing streak.

McBride’s 21 points marked the junior’s 10th game this season with 20 or more points – making him the first JMU player since Terrence Edwards Jr. with 10 20-point games in the same season. Cliff Davis added 11 points and led JMU with five assists, while Bradley Douglas scored 10 points.

Luke Wilson and Alonzo Dodd each scored 18 points to lead the Mountaineers’ scoring output. App State finished just 19-of-54 (.352) from the floor and 6-of-28 (.214) from behind the arc, while also going just 14-of-24 (.583) from the charity stripe.

How It Happened
First Half: James Madison 29, App State 24
• JMU raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes, but App State clawed back to take an 8-7 lead at 13:39.
• Back-to-back treys from Douglas extended JMU’s lead to eight (24-16) at the 3:49 mark.
• McBride and Douglas scored the final eight points of the half, giving the Dukes a 29-24 lead at the break.

Second Half: James Madison 69, App State 58
• The Mountaineers remained within striking distance in the opening minutes, but a 6-0 spurt gave the Dukes a 51-39 lead with 12:39 left and forced an App timeout.
• JMU took its biggest lead (55-39) with 10:06 left and did not let the Mountaineers get within single digits the rest of the way.

Game Notes
• Davis finished with 11 points, extending his streak of double-figure games to 10.
• Davis also made two 3-pointers, giving him 84 makes on the season. He moved into sole possession of eighth on the JMU single season threes list, and is now one away from tying Stuckey Mosley (2017-18)
• The win for JMU marked its first over App State since Feb. 4, 2023 – snapping a five-game skid to the Mountaineers.
• McBride finished with 21 points, his 10th 20-point game of the 2025-26 season. He is now one of nine JMU players since the 2004-05 season (per Stathead) with at least 10 20-point games.
• JMU has now won three consecutive games for just the second time this season.
• JMU improved to 10-3 at home this season.
