JMU Baseball lets seventh inning lead slip away in 8-5 loss to No. 12 Southern Miss

HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – No. 12 Southern Miss used a six-run seventh inning to come from behind and upend James Madison baseball, 8-5, on Friday night in Sun Belt Conference action at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes fell to 20-28 (10-15 Sun Belt), while the Golden Eagles improved to 36-14 (17-8 Sun Belt).

Seven of the nine Dukes in the starting lineup recorded hits, with seniors Wyatt Campbell and Jack Cannizzaro and junior Ike Schmidly each recording a pair.

How It Happened
Second Inning
USM struck first, using a single to get on the board.

Third Inning
After leading the inning off with a double, the Golden Eagles used a grounder to make it 2-0.

The Dukes took a run back on a two-out single off the bat of Schmidly.

Fourth Inning
Three consecutive singles tied the game for JMU, as Cannizzaro’s brought in the tying run. After a passed ball allowed both runners to move into scoring position, sophomore Jack Anderson gave JMU a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Fifth Inning
With runners on second and third, redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson lifted a fly ball into center field to drive in a run. The Dukes took a 5-2 lead the next at bat with a Campbell double.

Seventh Inning
USM brought home six runs to take the lead, capping the scoring with a two-run homer to take an 8-5 lead.

Game Notes
• The Dukes played in front of a crowd of 1,008 fans, the largest crowd since 2019 and eighth largest in the history of Veterans Memorial Park.
