HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison baseball fell in the series finale on Sunday afternoon to App State, 14-10, at Veterans Memorial Park in Sun Belt Conference action.
The Dukes fell for the seventh straight game, dropping their record to 16-22 (6-11 Sun Belt), while the Mountaineers improved to 22-16 (10-8 Sun Belt).
At the dish, senior Jack Guerrero and junior Kyle Langley each had three-hit games for JMU that tied career highs for both players. Guerrero went 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and two doubles, while Langley went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
How It Happened
First Inning
App State struck first with a run on a groundout.
The Dukes took their first lead of the weekend by loading the bases in the home half of the inning, tying the game on a single from Langley and then taking the lead from a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Ike Schmidly.
Second Inning
A double tied the game for App State at two.
Freshman Cameron Aycock regained the lead for JMU, lacing a single into center field to score senior Wyatt Campbell to make the score 3-2.
Third Inning
The Mountaineers sent 10 batters to the plate and came away with four runs to take a 6-3 lead.
Fourth Inning
Kameron Miller homered and Drew DuPont hit a two-run to make it 9-3 in favor of App State.
On a 1-1 pitch, senior Jack Cannizzaro launched his second homer of the season to cut the deficit to five.
Sixth Inning
Back-to-back leadoff doubles from Guerrero and sophomore Jack Anderson plated a run for the Dukes, before Cannizzaro laid down a squeeze bunt to score Anderson and make it 9-6.
Seventh Inning
The Mountaineers pushed their lead back to five runs after a two-run double down the third base line made it 11-6.
Two base hits from Schmidly and Guerrero knocked in a pair of runs for JMU, preceding Anderson’s sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game at 11-9.
Eighth Inning
App State added a trio of runs on a double and a single to take a 14-9 lead.
Langley’s third hit of the game brought home a run, making it 14-10 with an opposite field single.
Game Notes
• Jaden Kinsler pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, tying his season high in strikeouts with six.
• The Dukes scored double-digit runs in back-to-back games after being shut out for the first time since 2015.
• JMU batted .600 (6-for-10) with runners in scoring position and .471 (8-for-17) with runners on.
• Across the three-game series, JMU hit .429 (18-for-42) with runners on and .483 (14-for-29) with runners in scoring position.
