HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – An eight-goal third quarter launched James Madison lacrosse past Temple, 16-10, in American Conference play at Sentara Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes (6-5, 2-1 American) were led by Kaitlyn Carney’s career-high seven goals. Peyton Root also achieved a career-high of her own with seven assists, also adding a pair of scores. Olivia Matthews added three goals and an assist for her second hat trick of the season. The defense was led by Maddie Weybrecht’s two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Abigail Beattie got the start and the win in the cage, making 10 saves and posting a .500 save percentage.
Temple (8-4, 0-3 American) was paced by Amelia Wright’s five goals. Riley Horoshko played all 60 minutes in the cage, making five saves.
How it Happened
First Quarter – James Madison 3, Temple 1
• The Dukes quickly took a two-goal lead, with Root opening the scoring for JMU in the fourth minute of play.
• After the Owls converted on a free position attempt, the Dukes responded with a score from Carney to retake a two-point lead.
Second Quarter – James Madison 6, Temple 4
• The Owls added two unanswered points at the beginning of the quarter to tie the game at three apiece.
• JMU ended the half on a 3-1 run to take a two-goal lead at the break. Matthews accounted for two goals during the stretch.
Third Quarter – James Madison 14, Temple 7
• James Madison exploded in the third, scoring eight goals to Temple’s three, as Root connected with Carney three times during the run.
• The Dukes dominated the draw circle during the third, out-drawing Temple 10-2.
Fourth Quarter – James Madison 16, Temple 10
• The Owls chipped away at JMU’s lead, adding three in the fourth; however, they could not come back as JMU grabbed its second conference win of the year

• Carney’s seven goals are the most by a Duke this season and are tied for the second most in a game in program history.
• Root’s six assists are tied for the second most in a game in program history.
• Harlowe Healey’s 17 draw controls are the most by a player in an American Conference game this season.
