Bridgewater Women’s Lacrosse falls at home to Marymount, 9-7

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse team fell to the Marymount Saints 9-7 Tuesday evening.

Records: Bridgewater (1-1), Marymount (3-0)

How it Happened:
• Marymount scored the first goal of the contest two and a half minutes into the first period. Bridgewater quickly responded when Kyla Fricks connected with Paige Mayers for the Eagles’s first goal of the game. There was a scoring drought for a chunk of the quarter, but it was broken by Lauren Garrett with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Paige Overeem attempted to extend the BC lead heading into the end of the quarter, but it was stopped by the Saints’ keeper.
• In the first minute of the second quarter, Marymount’s Tess Valentino evened the score at two apiece. Valentino found the back of the net a few minutes later with a free position shot on an extra man opportunity, giving Marymount a 3-2 lead. Marymount added one more goal to their total with nine minutes remaining in the half. Taylor Price found Ella Price with 8:20 remaining in the period to cut the deficit to one. Valentino scored her third goal of the contest with 3:17 remaining in the second quarter. Bridgewater’s Mayers was gifted a free position shot in the final seconds of the half but failed to convert.
• Marymount scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, giving them their biggest lead of the contest at 7-3. Madelaine Godat, assisted by Ella Price, scored with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter to break the BC scoring drought. Marymount scored with 3:43 remaining in the quarter to push their lead to 8-4. Bridgewater mustered a couple of shot attempts to end the quarter, but were unable to convert.
• In the first three minutes of the final period, Bridgewater found the back of the net three times to cut the Marymount lead to one. Andrea Lorca was gifted a free position attempt with 13:54 remaining in the contest and dished it to Mayers for the goal. Bridgewater capitalized on a turnover, leading to a Lorca goal with 12:30 on the clock. Mayers scored seconds later to make the score 8-7. Marymount scored with 11:10 remaining to make it a 9-7 ball game.

Match Notes:
• Paige Mayers recorded a hat trick, putting her at nine goals in the season. Mayers also led the Eagles in ground balls and caused turnovers with four in each category.
• Ella Price led the team in points and assists, recording a goal and three assists for four points.
• Maisen Jenkins played the entire game in goal for the Eagles and was credited with 7 saves and three ground balls. Jenkins sits one save away from 175 career saves, and one ground ball away from 50 career ground balls.
• Marymount had two players record hat tricks (Valentino and Blair).
• Bridgewater and Marymount were almost even on shot attempts. Bridgewater narrowly won the shot battle with 23 shot attempts compared to Marymount’s 21.
• Marymount won 12 draw controls. Carmella Garcia was credited with nine DCs.
• This is the closest margin of victory in this series since 2023, when Bridgewater won 18-16. The series between the two teams favors Marymount with a 3-12 record.

Bridgewater hosts McDaniel on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
