Authorities investigating shooting in the Town of Grottoes

GROTTOES, VA (Rocktown Now) — At approximately 9:00 PM on June 21, 2026, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) and the Grottoes Police Department responded to a shooting on Dogwood Avenue in the Town of Grottoes.

Also responding were several other law enforcement agencies as well as Grottoes Fire & Rescue and Rockingham County Fire & Rescue.

According to a report from Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson, a verbal dispute began outside a restaurant and quickly escalated into a physical altercation among numerous male subjects.

During that altercation, one of the subjects involved reportedly fired multiple shots at a vehicle, the occupants of which were also involved to some degree in the fight that was going on in the roadway at that point.

44-year-old Raymond Nowlin of Charlottesville was the driver of the vehicle and was struck once by the gunfire and was transported to UVA Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident has been determined to be related to biker gang activity, and the shooter fled the scene along with several other unknown individuals on motorcycles.

The investigation is still active and ongoing.
