The Stanley Fire Department is investigating what sparked a fire that consumed a home in the Battle Creek area of the county yesterday, sending an elderly man to the hospital.

The fire started early in the afternoon at the home just off of Route 340. Seven agencies responded to the blaze, and photos show the fire gutted the interior of the home, ultimately causing the roof to collapse.

Chief Terry Pettit said that 81-year-old Earl Kibbler was the only occupant of the home, and suffered burns to his upper body. He was flown to a Washington D.C. burn unit for treatment.
