CRAIGSVILLE, Va – Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville is closing next summer.
The Virginia Department of Corrections sent out a press release Friday morning stating that four prisons, including Augusta Correctional, will be closed by July 1st.
Parole Board Chairman Chadwick Dotson stated in the release that these decisions were made to enhance employee, inmate and probationer safety as well as address longstanding staffing challenges and in consideration of significant ongoing maintenance costs.
The other three prisons that will close are Sussex II State Prison, Haynesville Correctional Unit #17 and Stafford Community Corrections Alternative Program.
Dotson took over as head of the department in September.
