With Tuesday being the Fourth of July, the 61st annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony took place at Monticello.

This year’s speaker was University of Virginia president Jim Ryan, who told the 54 new U-S citizens to continue to write your own stories.

The ceremony, which took place at Monticello’s West Portico, also featured a presentation of the colors from the Boy Scouts of America Troop 75 as well as music from the Charlottesville Opera and the Oratorio Society of Virginia.
